英語文法解析 - 28 How to Write an Essay Title (=Topic)

1. The title of the paper should be stated clearly and briefly and should be place in the center at the top of the first page. 標題文字要簡潔明確，置於文章第一頁第一行的中間

 

2. Capitalize the first letter in all words of titles and subtitles except articles (a, an, the), prepositions (of, on, to, up etc.), and connecting words (for, and, nor, but, so etc.) if fewer than five letters. 除了冠詞、介係詞或少於五個字母的連接詞外，標題所有文字的第一個字母要大寫
Ex:  My First Trip to Japan;  A Diamond Is Forever (Be動詞要大寫)

 

3. Do NOT underline the title. 不可在標題下面加上底線

Ex: not: My Most Unforgettable Holiday  (錯)

but: My Most Unforgettable Holiday

 

4. Do NOT use quotation marks in your title unless the title of your paper is or contains a direct quotation. 不可在標題使用引號，除非標題中包含直接引述文字。

Ex: not: "My Favorite Holiday" (錯)

but: My Favorite Holiday

 

5. Do NOT punctuate the title unless the tile is a question itself.

標題不可使用標點符號，除非標題是問句

Ex: not: The Importance of English(.) (錯)

but: The Importance of English

but: Why Should We Study English?

 

6. When a hyphenated word appears in the title, only capitalize the first word or prefix unless the second word is a noun or an adjective or as important as the first word.
當標題中含有連接符號時，僅需第一個字首大寫，除非第二個字是名詞或形容詞，或者與第一個字同樣重要

Ex: The Wonderful World of Make-up;
The (Pre-Historic) Times (有實質意義的字首要大寫)

7. Do Not use abbreviations in the title. 標題避免使用縮寫

Ex: not: If l were an (Eng.) Teacher (錯)

   but: If l were an English Teacher

 

8. 
Using italics when italics would be used in taxonomic names, the names of ships, the titles of books, films, and other creative works, and foreign phrases are italicized both in ordinary text and in article titles

Ex: The USS Enterprise 美國企業號軍艦

 The Time 美國時代雜誌

The Titanic 鐵達尼號

 

9. Do NOT use all capital letters for the title because they will make the title difficult to read.

Ex: not: THE IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE LEARNING (不可全部使用大寫字母)

but: The Importance of Language Learning
